Outreach Campaign on Safe Migration, Human Trafficking, and Child Marriage Prevention

📅 Duration: 22nd – 28th August 2023
📍 Location: Six Unions in Two Sub-Districts, Narsingdi District
📢 Organized by: OKUP-FSTIP (Funded by USAID)

As part of my commitment to raising awareness on safe migration, human trafficking prevention, and child marriage, I organized and led six large-scale outreach campaigns across six unions in two sub-districts under Narsingdi District. These campaigns aimed to engage local communities, particularly aspiring migrants, families, and young individuals, on the risks and challenges they may face, equipping them with critical knowledge to make informed decisions.

Innovative Awareness Approach: The Power of Street Drama

To ensure maximum community engagement, we designed our awareness campaign using a street drama format, featuring the play "না জানিয়া বিদেশ যাইওনা" ("Nā jāniẏā bidēśa yā'i'ōnā" – Do Not Migrate Without Knowing the Risks). Street drama is a powerful and accessible tool, especially in rural areas, as it brings crucial messages to people in an interactive and relatable manner.

The drama was carefully scripted to reflect the real-life struggles and experiences of migrant workers, human trafficking survivors, and child marriage victims. We incorporated songs, magic tricks, and storytelling to make the messages engaging, memorable, and impactful.

💡 Core Messages of the Drama:
Safe Migration: The importance of proper documentation, ethical recruitment channels, and financial literacy before migrating abroad.
Human Trafficking Risks: How traffickers exploit vulnerable individuals, and the red flags and preventive measures to avoid being trafficked.
Child Marriage Prevention: The negative consequences of child marriage on education, health, and future opportunities.

After each performance, I personally led interactive discussions, reinforcing the play’s messages by providing real-life examples, statistics, and case studies. I also highlighted the services offered by the OKUP-FSTIP project and how individuals can seek assistance, legal support, and counseling.

Challenges & Lessons Learned from First-Hand Experience

Organizing large-scale community campaigns in rural areas comes with logistical, social, and cultural challenges. However, overcoming these hurdles was an invaluable learning experience.

🚧 Challenges Encountered:
🔹 Community Perception & Engagement: Some villagers were initially hesitant about attending the sessions due to lack of awareness or misconceptions about migration risks.
🔹 Weather & Logistics: Conducting outdoor events over multiple locations required careful planning to ensure smooth execution despite unpredictable weather conditions.
🔹 Limited Access to Women & Girls: Due to cultural barriers, reaching young girls and women—who are often most vulnerable to child marriage and trafficking—required additional efforts.

Key Lessons Learned:
Interactive & Culturally Relevant Messaging Works: The combination of storytelling, visuals, and humor significantly increased audience engagement.
Building Trust is Essential: Addressing sensitive topics like trafficking and child marriage requires a trust-based approach, making it crucial to involve local leaders, teachers, and community influencers.
Sustained Awareness is Needed: A single campaign is not enough—there is a continuous need for follow-up activities, community-based support, and survivor-centered services.

Personal Reflection: The Impact of Community Engagement

One of the most profound moments for me during this campaign was witnessing the curious eyes of individuals who had never heard of OKUP or our programs before. Their eagerness to learn, the genuine questions they asked, and their desire to understand these critical issues reaffirmed the importance of grassroots awareness.

Through this campaign, I enhanced my skills in community mobilization, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and public speaking. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience that strengthened my belief in empowering communities with knowledge as a powerful tool for social change.

This initiative was not just about awareness—it was about inspiring action, preventing exploitation, and safeguarding the rights of vulnerable individuals. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this cause and remain committed to expanding these outreach efforts in the future.

🔹 Together, we can create a world where migration is safe, human trafficking is eradicated, and child marriage is a thing of the past.
