Mentoring at Dhaka University Rover Scout Group (DURSG): Compass, Map, and Leasing Techniques

Mentoring at Dhaka University Rover Scout Group (DURSG): Compass, Map, and Leasing Techniques

On 18th July 2019, I had the opportunity to mentor members of the Dhaka University Rover Scout Group (DURSG) during a crew meeting. It was a special day for me as it marked my first experience as a mentor, an experience that turned out to be both rewarding and educational.

The session focused on two important skills:

  1. Compass and Map Reading

I guided members on how to use a compass effectively for navigation and interpret maps accurately to understand terrain and locations. These skills are critical for outdoor activities, fostering self-reliance and precision in scouting tasks.
Leasing, an essential skill in scouting, involves tying bamboos with ropes in square or angle styles. I demonstrated how to join bamboos securely to create larger structures and shared practical applications, such as making racks and other home-usable items. This hands-on session allowed members to see how leasing can be used creatively in both outdoor and everyday settings.

  2. Leasing Techniques

The experience was truly amusing and enlightening for me. For the first time, I stood in the role of a mentor, sharing knowledge while learning immensely from the process itself. Mentoring reinforced my understanding of these skills and deepened my appreciation for the impact of hands-on learning and guidance.

This event not only strengthened my connection with fellow Rover Scouts but also reaffirmed my belief that mentoring is an incredible opportunity for both teaching and personal growth.
