🚸 Awareness Program for Foot Over Bridge and Underpass: Promoting Safe Pedestrian Practices

On June 8, 2018, I had the privilege of participating in an Awareness Program for Foot Over Bridge and Underpass organized by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in collaboration with Bangladesh Scouts and the Dhaka University Rover Scout Group (DURSG). Held at Shahbag, Dhaka, the program was an essential initiative aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and encouraging the use of designated facilities like foot over bridges and underpasses to reduce road accidents.

Program Objectives
Many pedestrians, despite the availability of foot over bridges and underpasses, often take shortcuts across busy roads, endangering their lives and contributing to traffic congestion. The program aimed to educate people about the importance of using these facilities for their safety.
Pedestrians were informed about the rules and regulations related to road safety, emphasizing their role in creating a safe traffic environment.
By promoting safe practices, the program sought to significantly reduce road accidents involving pedestrians, particularly in high-traffic areas like Shahbag.
Program Activities
Volunteers, including Rover Scouts, distributed brochures and leaflets containing important road safety tips and instructions on how to use foot over bridges and underpasses.
Participants directly interacted with pedestrians, explaining the dangers of crossing roads without using designated facilities and urging them to prioritize their safety.
To make the learning process more effective, volunteers demonstrated the proper use of foot over bridges and underpasses, showcasing the ease and benefits of these facilities.
Awareness signboards were placed at strategic locations near Shahbag to remind pedestrians to use the available safety infrastructure.
My Role in the Event
  • Engaging with Pedestrians: I approached individuals and groups, explaining the importance of using foot over bridges and underpasses.
  • Distributing Materials: I handed out brochures and leaflets, ensuring the information reached as many people as possible.
  • Demonstrating Safe Practices: I helped guide pedestrians on how to safely use the facilities, particularly elderly individuals and children.

Significance of the Program
Impact and Takeaways
Looking Forward

The program focused on addressing key issues related to road safety in Dhaka, which has one of the highest rates of pedestrian casualties in Bangladesh due to jaywalking and non-compliance with traffic rules. The primary goals were:

  1. Encouraging the Use of Foot Over Bridges and Underpasses

  2. Raising Public Awareness About Traffic Rules

  3. Reducing Pedestrian Accidents

The awareness campaign involved various interactive and engaging activities to effectively convey the message:

  1. Distributing Informational Materials

  2. One-on-One Engagement

  3. Live Demonstrations

  4. Signboard Installation

As a member of the Dhaka University Rover Scout Group (DURSG), I actively participated in:

Dhaka’s traffic system faces immense challenges due to the high population density and lack of compliance with road safety measures. This program served as a critical step in promoting a culture of safety among pedestrians. According to BRAC's Road Safety Program, pedestrian fatalities account for approximately 50% of road traffic deaths in Dhaka. Simple measures like using foot over bridges and underpasses can save countless lives and alleviate traffic congestion.

The event had a noticeable impact, with many pedestrians pledging to use foot over bridges and underpasses more frequently. It also highlighted the power of collaboration between local government authorities like DSCC, voluntary organizations like Bangladesh Scouts, and youth groups like DURSG.

Personally, the program reinforced my belief in the importance of community engagement and awareness campaigns for addressing public safety issues. It was an enriching experience that allowed me to contribute meaningfully to society while honing my leadership and communication skills.

As Dhaka continues to grow and urbanize, ensuring pedestrian safety will remain a critical challenge. Events like this serve as reminders of the collective effort needed to create a safer city. I look forward to participating in similar initiatives in the future to promote road safety and public welfare.
